Common Core State Standards
Statewide standards for all public schools have been established in the following curricular areas: Language Arts and Mathematics. Reports of student progress will be based on his/her progress on the performance benchmarks under these content standards. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, or SBAC, is also aligned to these standards and will be administered to students in Grades 3, 4, and 5. The Hawaii State Assessment, or HSA, will still be administered to students in Grade 4 for Science.
The state's adopted reading program is called Wonders. All grade levels will use Wonders as the main program for reading. Kindergarten will continue to use the Reading Mastery program. This approach utilizes a Direct Instruction method where students are grouped according to the reading ability. Students are monitored and regrouped as they progress.
The state's adopted math program is called Stepping Stones. All grade levels will be implementing Stepping Stones as their main program for math.
